But establishing trust is perhaps the most important branding ingredient of all – and social media is the most effective way to establish your brand as a trustworthy product or service. Here are ten ways to brand your product or improve your branding with social media:

1. Learn from Others – Regardless of your product or service, your brand must take into account the successes and mistakes of others who have previously used social media. “Experience is the best teacher.”

2. Avoid Conceit – You have been in business for years and you have great pride of what you have accomplished. This is good. But when considering a shift to a new medium like social media, you have to be wary of excessive pride.

3. Listen to Your Customers – Customers are your greatest asset. Listen to what they want and, whenever possible, do what they say. Today’s consumers have the power of knowledge and the ability to compare every aspect of your business or brand with your competition.

4. Choose the Right Mix – When considering social media networks, take into account that not every network can and will suit your needs. Study the networks you want to use, test them and then decide whether it will benefit your product or negatively influence it. Twitter may seem like a good idea but a certain brand of hair shampoo, for example, could easily fail to utilize Twitter.

5. Avoid Being Intrusive – Whatever it is you are trying to sell, remember this: You are entering other people’s space and you have to be welcomed. Whatever social media network you use, always keep in mind that intrusive advertising will cause more harm than good.

6. Be Innovative – Imitating an existing promotional campaign, or product, is easier and cheaper than being creative and innovative with your own approach. But with the large number of social media users all over the various networks, someone will eventually notice this and the negative publicity may hurt your business.

7. Be Sincere – Most people are aware of your intentions, good and bad. Try to be sincere in your approach. But you still need to remember your business focus and your brand objectives.

8. Be Active, Available & Consistent – If you are seeking to build a good and memorable brand reputation, you have to remain active throughout the networks you have chosen and be consistent in your tone, messages and the relations you build with your group, friends and followers.

9. You Are Being Watched – Whether one of your employees send a wrong message about your brand, or a customer complains about your service, once you choose to take your brand on the social media ride, you may face many bumps ahead. Watch out what you say and how you say it because you can’t take it back.

10. Have a Contingency Plan of Action – Social media requires a special contingency plan, with different scenarios, to battle any kind of opposed and dismissive reactions about your brand. The exit plan is a tricky business in the case of social media. The real objective is to know when to pull the plug before losses are too severe.

Listen, learn and read continuously about social media and its’ possibilities. Look for well trusted sites that offer good social media tips and try to apply them whenever possible.
